I told them multiple times that I am not asking for help and using their software, that I am trying to report a critical error in their user authentication system and they just don't care. When I emailed them about these problems they simply told me multiple times that they do not help personal users through email and suggested I created a new account to ask for help in their support forum implying that they genuinely believe that a random user in a public forum can access their user database and control their user authentication system. I don't have access to a two-step verification system, I don't have access to any trusted device system and I don't have access to their support forums. I am unable to log into my account from any device, but I am able to remote access a host machine without an account. I can confirm that they have some serious bugs in their software and they are not taking them seriously. Your average PC is using probably 10+ times the amount of idle power as a router. You're already running a router, so you incur little to no extra power costs with a more advanced router VS your old gaming rig with a gig NIC installed in it. The systems most people have from 5 years ago are likely not going to fit that bill. I guess the tipping point is if you have a low power system lying around. In any case, PFSense is an incredible package to give you all the security you need for your home network, whether you DIY or buy the hardware new. Or get the D-Link dgs-1100-05 or dgs-1100-08 for around $30 and use vlans (it's actually pretty easy and it's a perfect way to learn). But do you have any old PC (desktop or laptop) from the last 5 years sitting around? Buy yourself an intel gig add-in card for around $30-$50 and you're all set.

Well, technically that's true, IF you built your own. I've had 3 recommendations for that now, and it's not a terrible idea.but it would cost more to build a dedicated, low-power system to run pfsense than to just get a VPN router. Since that means I need new routers, this is going to get expensive.

I guess it's time to set up private VPN's and use remote desktop everywhere. Well gah! I liked TeamViewer, and it was practically the last bastion of PC remote control software, with LogMeIn and the rest all having gotten rid of their free and low-cost tiers.
